The Pedometer Experiment…
I've always been reluctant to get a pedometer for my wrist because I figured it was too easy to "game" the system, joking..."he could get steps playing the piano".
.
However, I recently got an Apple Watch and love all the data it provides.
.
I also love the note taking features.
.
I used to carry around a voice recorder because ideas can come and go quickly.
.
Now, I just hold the watch to my mouth and the idea is captured for all eternity...or until I delete it.
.
Anyway, I wanted to see if the Pedometer feature was accurate.
./
I like to get 10,000 steps per day and was curious if having a pedometer swinging on my arm was giving me an accurate count.
.
So, I paused and took a pic of where I was...
.
.
I then counted out 100 steps and the pedometer read...
.
Close enough!
.
I then wondered if it was a function of my swinging arm, so I walked 100 more steps without swinging the arm my watch is on...
.
.
Again, close enough!
.
I went home shortly after that because it started to rain but I still had almost 1000 steps to get before 10,000 so I wondered how accurate it would be if I marched in place.
.
Starting at...
.
.
and marching in place for 100 steps...
.
.
98 is pretty darn close.
.
Then, marching 100 steps without swinging my arm...
.
.
Spot on.
.
Here's the weird part.
.
I wondered if sitting in a chair and just moving my arm for 100 swings (up and down =1) would register 100 steps.
.
When I wondered this, the count was...
.
.
After 100 swings, sitting in a chair, the count was 202 higher!
.
To be clear...sitting in a chair start with the arm on your leg...bend elbow up and then back down to your leg = 1 by my count. I did that 100 times and it registered as 202 steps.
.
Weird but interesting.
.
Still, color me impressed with the accuracy.
.
Yes, you could get "steps" playing the piano but you're only cheating yourself.
.
EXPERIMENT DONE!
