Ironing for fun and profit?

I'm not sure why this idea is so interesting to me.

I certainly can't do it myself but I would gladly pay someone to do it for me...and sew on buttons my dryer chews off.

I'm speaking of ironing clothes.

Oh sure I've tried to iron my own clothes but I don't have the gift nor am I willing to put in the time to learn.  Sweaters cover a lot of wrinkles this time of year but they look out of place at BBQs in July!

I wrote recently about a reader looking to earn money from home so she could be available to care for her husband who she moved there to save money.  My readers offered many great ideas.  I included a link to an article from a British guru who suggested IRONING as a way to make extra money.

In the comments of my post, Janis wrote...

"I love the ironing at home concept. A former co-worker found someone for this in our area who had lots of customers and couldn’t take any more customers – she was that busy."

As I tend to do when I start thinking about advertising a simple income opportunity I go to AdHuntr.com and see if people are advertising this service in other parts of the world on Craigslist.

Sure enough, when I searched for "ironing service" with quotes I got a bunch of results...

There are some Facebook pages for this service...

If you're interested in starting a service like this, use the links above and others you find to get ideas for how much you can charge, headlines to use etc.

PRICING

I've seen prices vary...

Some charge per piece.

Some charge per basket.

Some charge per hour.

Some prices I saw...

40 pieces for $35...

Min $22 per basket...

$1.25 each item...

As a potential customer I like the per piece idea.  I like knowing what I'll pay.

ADVERTISING

I think the best way to get the word out about this service is first, via your friends.

Are you on Facebook?  Great!

Start a page for your new service using ideas from the pages I've linked to above and others you find.

Not on Facebook?  Then how about email?

You could also develop a flyer to hand out to friends.

If you've got an unusual story about why you are starting this service, TELL IT.

Here's how to introduce the subject on Facebook...

I'm not sure Craigslist is the best way to advertise this but since it's free it's worth a try.

If it were me, I'd CALL or email some of the people advertising on Craigslist, assuming they aren't nearby, and talk to them about their experiences.

Introduce yourself and stress where you're calling from so they know you aren't competition.  You'll no doubt get some good ideas from those actually doing this.

I have noticed that most of the links above lead to British people/companies offering ironing services in the UK.  I think they'd be intrigued to get a call (SKYPE!)  from the US about their services.

That's all for now.  I'll probably add to this post if there are questions/suggestions from people in the comments.

What do you think?
